BRECKENRIDGE - Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) officials will begin work Oct. 1 on bridge abutments at North Park Avenue and Main Street in Breckenridge as part of the first phase of construction of a roundabout.
The roundabout is part of the town's bid to turn Main Street into a pedestrian-friendly road while Highway 9 traffic is routed to Park Avenue. Work will include rerouting the paved recreation path during the construction and installing the abutments where a "flyover" lane will lead southbound drivers from Highway 9 onto Park Avenue
The work schedule includes weekend construction through November, weather permitting. Next summer, CDOT will build the roundabout.
The construction was to have begun in August, but CDOT just awarded the bid to a contractor. CDOT officials had also hoped to have started on a rock wall on the hillside on the east side of the highway and possibly begin work on a new intersection at South Park Avenue and Main Street.
The delay could push construction at the two intersections into 2006.
